• A total of more than 30,000 light fittings will be replaced by LED type lighting, which will enhance the beauty of the capital of Galicia and a World Heritage Site.
  • The new lighting is of higher quality, it provides environmental benefits and will reduce the electricity consumption for the municipality's public lighting by 60%.
  • The project will be undertaken using local suppliers, with equipment and materials from Galicia.

Endesa X, Endesa's energy services subsidiary, has been awarded the renovation of the outdoor public lighting in Santiago de Compostela as a result of a tender presented to the City Council of the capital of Galicia. The energy company will undertake the project a joint venture(UTE or Temporary Union of Companies in Spanish) together with Ferrovial, and it will be done through the Energy Solutions area of the Construction division. The contract has a duration of ten years and the value amounts to €42 million

Endesa X and Ferrovial have just started work on changing more than 30,000 light fittings in the city's public lighting system to LED devices, together with 535 control centres, as well as other public road installations. The light provided by the new technology is of higher quality, which will enhance the beauty of Santiago de Compostela, which is a World Heritage Site, creating spaces with intelligent and sustainable lighting. It also provides environmental and economic benefits, since LED lights are of lower consumption, thus promoting energy efficiency. It is estimated that the municipality will be able to reduce by 60% the electricity consumption associated with the light fittings.

The project also includes the deployment of a platform to manage the operation and maintenance of public lighting throughout the city. The innovatory feature of the project will be the incorporation of a 5G system that will improve the management and resolution of incidents.

The contract promotes the commitment to kilometre zero, that is, the equipment and materials are acquired from local suppliers. There is also a commitment to the Slowlight initiative, a project that advocates sustainable lighting and that will contribute to reducing light pollution to improve the protection of the night sky.
