In order to reduce the impacts of the El Nino phenomenon, the Ecopetrol Group executed a rigorous energy efficiency program (to optimize the consumption of electricity, natural gas and thermal energy) which allowed savings of 3.89 petajoules in 2023, a figure that is the highest since measurements began (2018) and 250% higher than that presented in 2022.

This plan also allowed a reduction in emissions of 274,000 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to those captured by 4.5 million trees in 10 years.

To measure the magnitude of this result, it is worth mentioning that the savings achieved are similar to the annual electricity consumption of all households in the cities of Cartagena, Ibague and Cucuta.

The efficiency program identifies and implements energy-saving opportunities in the Ecopetrol Group's operations and is based on the use of digital technologies that allow the analysis of operational information and data by applying artificial intelligence.

This initiative, between 2018 and 2023, allowed a cumulative energy saving of 10.86 petajoules, which is equivalent to 4% of the country's annual electricity demand, and a reduction of about 708 thousand tons of CO2e emissions, which is similar to eliminating the emissions generated during a year by 157 thousand vehicles with traditional fuel.

The president of Ecopetrol, Ricardo Roa Barragan, highlighted that energy saving is one of the pillars to achieve the Ecopetrol Group's decarbonization goals and said: 'Energy efficiency and renewable energies are the greatest drivers of emissions reduction in the world, and Ecopetrol is committed to continue advancing these initiatives with challenging goals for 2030.'

The Ecopetrol Group is moving forward on the path towards the energy transition with a robust portfolio of renewable energies, decarbonization, natural climate solutions, water protection and care, among others, which will contribute to the comprehensive strategy to face the challenges of climate change.
