New Delhi, Apr 20 (EFE).- Tesla CEO and owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk, postponed his visit to India to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, initially scheduled for Monday next week, amid general elections underway in the country.

"Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Musk posted on X on Saturday.

Musk's visit had generated great expectation that his meeting with the prime minister would serve to announce Tesla's plans to build a plant in one of the foremost emerging markets on the planet, which the US company has been trying to make inroads into.

The meeting was expected to take place amid general elections, which began Friday and will take a month and a half to conclude, in which the Indian prime minister seeks a third term with the promise of turning India into a developed country and the third largest economy on the planet.

Modi had referred to this visit last week during an interview about the election campaign, in which he claimed that Musk's coming and interest was a sign of India's progress and the direction it was going in under his leadership.

Musk, who met with the Indian prime minister last year in New York, had then said Modi was pushing to get Tesla to make a significant investment in India, something he said he was willing to do when the time came.

A delay in Musk's visit signifies a delay in these negotiations, which otherwise was expected to give a boost to the Indian prime minister's election campaign. EFE
