TNB'S INAUGURAL ENERGY TRANSITION CONFERENCE REVITALISES CALLS FOR

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION TO EXPEDITE ENERGY TRANSITION

  • PM wants collective efforts to drive a cleaner & more sustainable future
  • PM praises TNB for leading discussions with ASEAN utilities & governments towards accelerating energy transition

The inaugural Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) Energy Transition (ET) Conference 2023 has re-energised the clarion call for international collaboration to accelerate energy transition (ET). Underscoring the importance of this partnership, Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, "Collective efforts can drive positive change for a cleaner and more sustainable future."

"By working together, we can leverage our collective strengths to accelerate the deployment of renewable technologies, the development of innovative energy storage solutions, and the enhancement of energy efficiency practices. Malaysia's strategic position as the ASEAN Energy Hub enables us to play a pivotal role in advancing the region's sustainable energy future towards Net Zero ASEAN."

Noting TNB's progress in the cross-border business and on leveraging the ASEAN Power Grid, he said this would improve broader energy security prospects and further enhance regional economic integration.

"TNB is leading discussions with ASEAN utilities and governments for resource-sharing and flexibility solutions at scale. The move will accelerate the energy transition pace in a responsible manner while balancing the elements of the energy trilemma," he said in his keynote address at the two-day conference, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last month.

Congratulating TNB for hosting this inaugural conference, he said the gathering was instrumental in accelerating a responsible energy transition through collaboration both locally and regionally to strengthen inter-regional grid connections, particularly towards greater energy security in ASEAN.

TNB President and CEO Dato' Indera Ir. Baharin Din in his speech at the conference said one of TNB's key priorities in meeting its Net Zero targets in the region is to strengthen the ASEAN Interconnection.

Sharing the latest feedback from his regional counterparts comprising Indonesia's PLN, Thailand's EGAT, Laotian's EDL and Singapore's SP Group, he said, they are committed to "making it happen", as the interconnection enables better RE allocation, supports system security, and opens up a gateway to over USD6.3 trillion of new investments by 2050 as projected by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). We all agreed that the timing was right to make the ASEAN Power Grid a reality as it was now a matter of our survival. "

Drawing from the lesson learnt from the energy transitions in other regions, he said existing technologies should not be completely displaced. Thus, the aim of decarbonising electricity too quickly under the current transitions introduces security and economic challenges, which become more complex if addressed in isolation. "It is for this reason that no one can reach our Net Zero targets alone, and that there is an urgent need to work together to optimise our resources while balancing the trilemma."

As a national utility, TNB is balancing the energy trilemma while enabling the nation's economic growth. "And I strongly believe that our plan achieves that, as our focus areas fully support the aspirations under the NETR. In particular, we are ensuring that our Grid is flexible enough to accommodate the evolving energy landscape, with plans to invest upwards of RM90 billion in the Grid over the next 6 years to support NETR."

TNB's Energy Transition Conference 2023 attracted over 2,500 delegates representing the various segments of the RE industry and sustainable technologies. Its exhibition area occupied a space of 7,500 square metres where the latest innovations, RE technologies and financing were put on display.
