Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. (Toshima-ku Tokyo; President and Representative Director: Nobuo Domae) announced that it will stop the free charge of paper shopping bags and will start charging them at MUJI stores in Japan from September 1st.
To Reduce the Use of Shopping Bags
Ryohin Keikaku aims to create a better relationship between people and nature, and it has been making every effort to help recycle resources and reduce waste. One such example is its initiatives around shopping bags.
Since March 2022, we stopped providing plastic shopping bags and switched to offer paper bags instead. At the same time, we enhanced our initiatives to encourage customers to bring their own bags and we expanded our line-up of reusable grocery bags. As a result of such efforts, the percentage of customers who brought their own bags was 77% (the percentage of customers who declined shopping bags among those who showed MUJI passport at the cashier) in FY 2021.
This time, in order to further reduce the use of shopping bags, MUJI stores nationwide (including MUJIcom and MUJI to GO stores) and Café&Meal MUJI stores will stop the free provision of paper shopping bags, and will start selling them at 10 yen (tax included) for all sizes. This is a move to conserve and recycle resources, to reduce the use of shopping bags, and to further promote the Bring Your Own Bag initiative.
Bring Your Own Bag Initiatives at MUJI
Ryouhin Keikaku has been making efforts to encourage customers to bring their own bags when shopping. We started a campaigned from June 2019 to give 530 (having similar pronunciation to the word "no waste" in Japanese) MUJI passport Miles* to customers who decline shopping bags at the cashier. At the same time, we have expanded the line-up of reusable grocery bags, such as the popular Jute My Bag using uncolored jute material that grows quickly and can be harvested in a short period of time. For bulk purchases or large-size products, we also provide recycled polypropylene shared bags at a deposit of 150 yen. These bags can be returned to all MUJI stores for refund when they are no longer needed.
*The MUJI passport Mile is a service that allows MUJI members to earn "MUJI miles" by shopping at MUJI stores / MUJI online store or visiting MUJI stores, etc. When miles are accumulated, users can receive gifts such as "MUJI Shopping Points" that can be used for purchases.
Going forward, Ryohin Keikaku will continue its efforts to recycle resources and reduce waste.
