HONOLULU, May 6, 2024 - Contractors for Hawaiian Electric will perform emergency utility work to trim and clear overgrown vegetation encroaching overhead power lines in two areas of Oahu on Wednesday, May 8, requiring partial lane closures and impacting traffic in the areas, as follows:

Manoa, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

  • The system reliability project will partially close the mauka-bound lane of Manoa Road approaching Lyon Arboretum and the Manoa Falls trailhead, which will remain open to hikers. Traffic will be contraflowed in the makai lane with intermittent stops by flagmen to allow vehicles and pedestrians to safely pass on the narrow road. No street parking will be allowed in the work zone. An electronic message board will be posted near Waakaua Street to alert the public of the planned work.

Alewa Heights, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

  • The vegetation work will partially close the makai-bound lane of Alewa Drive from Kaumailuna Place to Pono Kope Street. Traffic will be contraflowed in the mauka lane with intermittent stops by flagmen. Street parking also will be restricted in the work area.

Safety signs and traffic cones will mark the job sites and direct motorists to the contraflow lanes. Motorists should plan ahead for traffic delays, use alternate routes or avoid the areas during the scheduled work hours.
