SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2019, 2020, 2021

In the first nine months of 2022, Franchi Umberto Marmi committed to achieving an important milestone and at the same time planning a sustainable development strategy for the coming years, also thanks to the preparation of the first edition of the Franchi Company Sustainability Report.

With the Sustainability Report Franchi Umberto Marmi has started an exciting and challenging working path that allowed it to define and describe its commitment and efforts to do business responsibly. Transparency, responsibility and attention to the territory and to people are the essential elements characterising Franchi Umberto Marmi's mission since its origins, and which today become even more important and are the basis of the whole company's commitment starting from the Board of Directors, which defined the Governance and leadership of an international Group based on Ethics, respect for resources, the environment and people.

The Sustainability Report is therefore an extraordinary opportunity to show the commitment and passion of the company and its people who daily contribute to achieving economic and ESG results. It represents a real strategic and differentiation tool, an inspiration for all the company's stakeholders who daily support and work alongside Franchi Umberto Marmi and which identifies the main environmental, economic, social and compliance aspects to which FUM is exposed in pursuing its goals.

The document also represents a tool for dissemination and dialogue with the company's stakeholders.

To define the content of the report, FUM considered the following principles:

  • Stakeholders' inclusiveness,
  • context,
  • materiality.

The medium and long-term goals of Franchi Umberto Marmi were defined based on the Company's planning tools, Business Plan, Strategic Plan, Budget, whereas the document was prepared in compliance with the GRI Standards (Core option) and refers to the reporting period 2019/2020/2021 and is expected to be updated every 3 years.

The strategy of the company was defined based on a holistic approach, crossing the results of the materiality analysis with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda of the Nations Unite for sustainable development to identify the priority lines of action towards sustainability and to define the development objectives.

In particular, the main objectives that FUM has embraced and intends to pursue are worker safety, innovation, research, sustainable development of the territory, responsible production and consumption, environmental protection and reduction of impacts.

People

People are a fundamental pillar of the company. The main results achieved in recent years include the reduction in turnover and the facilitation of an ecosystem that places people at the centre.

Territory

Franchi Umberto Marmi represents an important reality in the Carrara economy and for over 50 years has been committed to the enhancement of its territory and through its activities, it contributes to the promotion and development of the culture of marble all over the world. FUM always favours and looks for local suppliers (Massa Carrara and neighbouring provinces) and, over time, the incidence of expenses towards local suppliers has been increasing, reaching approximately 97% of the total in 2021.

The contribution to the territory is also provided through investments to support the local community. In recent years, those intended for the Covid emergency are noteworthy, concentrated in the health sector, with the aim of supporting local authorities in the fight against the pandemic, in addition to FUM commitment in supporting culture and sport.

Environment

Over the years, Franchi Umberto Marmi has made sustainability a business model: research, innovative work tools and rigorous standards are the basis of the manufacturing processes and of the entire ecosystem in the work environment, so as to guarantee the well-being of those who contributes every day to increase the value of the company by ensuring high quality standards of products.

In particular, the environmental policy aims at:

  • Preventing any form of pollution generated by the activities;
  • Ensuring the compliance with the legal requirements and all other requirements relating to production/health and safety at work/environment applicable to the company;
  • Checking environmental impacts connected with its activities, considering a life cycle perspective of its products as far as possible in relation to the degree of corporate influence.

Franchi Umberto Marmi, in its path of reducing the environmental impact and of sustainable development, has evaluated its carbon footprint through the preparation of the GHG Inventory (currently in the certification phase) according to the reference standards. It highlighted a significant reduction of its impact thanks to the use of a tool for monitoring and reducing emissions through the purchase of green energy.

Energy efficiency and use of renewable energies

Regarding energy efficiency and the reduction of energy consumption from raw materials of fossil origin, in 2012 and 2014 Franchi Umberto Marmi had already installed photovoltaic panels for producing electricity from renewable sources (in 2021 93 MWh of green energy were produced).

Water management

The consumption of FUM water resources is mainly attributable to the use of services, whereas river and well water is used for sawing and polishing operations. The water supply is guaranteed by the withdrawal from an owned well and from a watercourse.

The containment policies already implemented by the Company have led to a decrease in consumption thanks to the use of water recirculation systems used for processing with significant reductions in consumption/withdrawals. The integrated management systems allow to monitor the parameters of both consumption and quality of the water withdrawn and discharged annually. FUM fully complies with the values imposed by its environmental authorisations both for water withdrawals and discharges in compliance in the Environmental Act (TU Ambientale) Legislative Decree 152/2006 and subsequent amendments.

Certifications

For some time, the company has begun an environmental sustainability analysis that is not only limited to its own processes, but which includes the entire life cycle chain of its products. In 2020, this path led to the certification and publication of the "Environmental Product Declaration of Bettogli marble slabs of thickness 2 and 3 cm" registered at The International EPD® System. In addition, Franchi Umberto Marmi has adopted a Certified Integrated Management System

according to the reference standards to satisfy the company's desire to reach always better organisational levels both for monitoring performances and for the protection of the environment and the safety of workers.
