(Alliance News) - Anglo American PLC on Tuesday named Alison Atkinson as its new group director of Projects & Development.

The London-based mining company said the appointment will take effect during the second quarter of 2023. Atkinson will join the Anglo American group management committee.

Atkinson has served as the chief executive officer of AWE PLC since 2020. AWE is an arms-length body of the UK government responsible for developing and maintaining elements of the UK's nuclear deterrent. She joined AWE in 2005 and has held "a number of senior roles in that time".

Atkinson is also currently a non-executive director of Kier Group PLC and chair of its Safety, Health & Environment committee. Kier is a Manchester, England-based construction firm.

Chief Executive Duncan Wanblad said: "Alison's proven experience of leading large technology-based organisations delivering leading edge programmes and projects is ideally suited to the phasing and development of our portfolio of major growth options. By integrating our next phase of 'FutureSmart mining' technologies into those projects and our existing operations, we expect to see further improvements in safety and productivity, with enhanced project economics, while reducing our energy and water intensity."

Anglo American shares were down 0.2% at 3,544.50 pence in London on Tuesday morning. They were up 0.5% at ZAR741.55 in Johannesburg.
