Dr. Angela Whelan is Director of Research at Ecofin, which she joined in 2003.
From 1989 to 2001 she worked as an equity analyst in the City at BZW (1989-94), Crédit Lyonnais Securities Europe (1994-2000) and Cazenove.
Throughout her career as an analyst, she has specialised in utilities with a particular focus on the U.K.
water industry which she has followed since its privatisation in 1989.
During the 1990s she was consistently ranked in the “Top Ten” list of analysts by institutional investors.
At both Crédit Lyonnais and Cazenove she was head of pan-European utilities and at Crédit Lyonnais she combined that position with head of U.K.
equity research.
In 1994, she was invited by Sir Ian Byatt, the Director General of OFWAT, the U.K.
water industry regulatory authority, to act as a special adviser to OFWAT for the six months prior to the publication of the draft determinations in connection with the 1994 five year periodic price review.
Her role was primarily to interpret and present the views of institutional investors as part of the review.
Following her move to Crédit Lyonnais, Dr. Whelan continued to advise OFWAT on investor-related matters.
In 2002, Dr. Whelan carried out a major independent survey of debt and equity investors in the U.K.
on behalf of Water UK, the U.K.
water industry association.
Angela Whelan graduated from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, with a B.A.
degree in Economics and received a PhD in Economics from Sussex University.
She was a research fellow at the University of York and a consultant at KPMG in London before becoming an equity analyst.
From 2002 to 2003, she was an associate consultant with Indepen Consulting.
She is a U.K.
national.
