Starbucks Corp. interim Chief Executive Howard Schultz has agreed to testify before a Senate committee, Senator Bernie Sanders said Tuesday.

The coffee chain executive agreed to testify before the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which is chaired by Mr. Sanders.

Mr. Sanders said the committee was scheduled to vote Wednesday to subpoena Mr. Schultz. He also alleged that Starbucks, under Mr. Schultz's leadership, has "done everything possible to prevent" unionization and collective bargaining efforts.

Starbucks didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

A drive to unionize new Starbucks cafes is slowing as the company has doled more pay and expanded benefits to nonunionized cafes. Starbucks is among a number of union campaigns that emerged at major U.S. retailers in recent years. Workers at Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and outdoor retail chain Recreational Equipment Inc. have filed for union elections at some locations.
