Hong Kong, 10 September 2019 Sotheby's will present a group of rare and exceptional diamonds in its Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Sale in Hong Kong on 7 October 2019.

Headlined by a 10.64 carat fancy vivid purplish pink internally flawless diamond, the sale also features a 100.02 carat fancy intense yellow diamond, and an 80.88 carat emerald cut white diamond, one of only five emerald cut diamonds exceeding 80 carats with excellent colour and clarity ever to be offered at auction.

Top quality gemstones include a 19th-century 37.29 carat Burmese sapphire and diamond brooch previously owned by Elizabeth Taylor, and a ruby mounted by American jeweller Raymond Yard. An important jadeite beaded necklace will be on offer, alongside contemporary jadeite designs and a selection of iconic pieces by famed jewellers such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Harry Winston.

"It is thrilling to be able to bring together three top class diamonds this autumn, all of which are exceptional in quality and rarely seen on the market, let alone presented in a single sale. We are set for a 'bright' season ahead as we continue our tradition of bringing some of the rarest and the most extraordinary gemstones to collectors in Asia and around the world."

  • Yvonne Chu, Acting Head of Department, Jewellery, Sotheby's Hong Kong

RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL DIAMONDS

Diamonds come in a wide spectrum of rainbow hues; however most diamonds form in the colourless range, or with tints of brown and yellow. For a diamond to display the vibrant, attractive colours such as those presented this season is an extremely rare occurrence.

A Rare and Exquisite 10.64 carat Fancy Vivid Purplish Pink Internally Flawless Diamond and Diamond Ring Est. HK$150,000,000 - 200,000,000 / US$20,000,000-26,000,000

Only 1% of all the pink diamonds graded by GIA are larger than 10 carats; the fact that this fancy vivid purplish pink diamond weighs 10.64 carats makes it an astonishing marvel. This pink diamond is also a rare subgroup comprising less than 4% of all pink diamonds which have achieved a 'Fancy Vivid' colour, its alluring hue further "sweetened" by a hint of purple.

Displaying a fine transparency and an exceptionally clear appearance, the diamond has been afforded the grade of an internally flawless gem. Polished as a radiant cut, with the outline of an emerald-cut diamond combined with the scintillation of a brilliant-cut diamond, the gemstone boasts an attractive combination of facets which enhance the face-up colour.

The subtle, but distinctive colour of pink gained fame as the colour of elegance and aristocratic splendour through the centuries. In time, the colour became strongly associated with women, femininity, and as a symbol of love.

The Dunhuang Pipa Necklace, Designed and Mounted by Anna Hu

Set with an Impressive 100.02 Carat Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond

Est. HK$40,000,000 - 50,000,000 / US$5,100,000 - 6,400,000

Yellow diamonds have rightfully earned their status as the most luminous of all the colours of the spectrum, and the most coveted colour amongst them is a fancy intense yellow, which exudes a sense of happiness, optimism, enlightenment and creativity.

This fancy intense yellow diamond carries an impressive weight of 100.02 carats and an internally flawless clarity grading, which can only be achieved with a crystal rough of over 200 carats, and through a meticulous process of planning and craftsmanship.

Furthermore, Sotheby's has commissioned haute joallierie artist Anna Hu to turn this true gift of nature into a contemporary jewellery creation, which has resulted in The Dunhuang Pipa Necklace. Inspired by musical exchanges that took place on the ancient trading route, the Silk Road, the 100.02 carat fancy intense yellow diamond is set into a design that resembles a Chinese pipa (a four-stringed Chinese lute), which can be worn as a necklace, a brooch, or an earring. See separate releasefor more details.

An 80.88 Carat Emerald Cut Diamond

Est. HK$78,000,000 - 100,000,000 / US$9,960,000-12,760,000

Of excellent colour and clarity, this 80.88 carat diamond is one of only five emerald cut diamonds exceeding 80 carats ever to have been offered at auction.

The exceptional size of the diamond was achieved as a result of precise polishing down to 0.01 carat, in order to preserve as much weight as possible whilst producing a flawless clarity. The diamond is D colour, displaying an exceptional transparency that typifies a Type IIa gem, which represent less than 2% of all diamonds mined. Boasting flawless clarity, the diamond invites one to be immersed in its elegance through the crisp facets of the emerald cut, which enhances the colourless brilliance of this gem.

TOP QUALITY GEMSTONES

A Superb 11.88 carat Ruby and Diamond Ring, Mounted by Raymond Yard

Est. HK$44,000,000 - 64,000,000 / US$5,600,000 - 8,000,000

This alluring 11.88 carat ruby and diamond ring displays a consistent and richly saturated colour that can only be found in the finest of Burmese rubies. The gem's "pigeon-blood" red colour, high clarity and brilliance, and fine proportion, all contribute to its overall beauty, which is further accentuated by the design of Raymond Yard.

3

Elizabeth Taylor's Brooch

A Rare 37.29 carat Sapphire and Diamond Brooch

Est. HK$13,500,000 - 18,000,000 / US$1,700,000 - 2,300,000

This 19th-century 37.29 carat sapphire and diamond brooch was a special gift given by Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor during their marriage. Taylor had initially spotted the brooch on a magazine cover, and unbeknownst to her, Burton - who had a keen eye for rare, splendid jewels of exceptional quality - purchased it as a surprise. The brooch stands as one of Elizabeth Taylor's prized antique jewels, amid a collection of predominantly signed pieces.

FINE JADEITE

An Important Jadeite Bead and Diamond Necklace

HK$25,000,000 - 32,000,000 / US$3,200,000 - 4,100,000

This important jadeite bead necklace is composed of forty-seven fine jadeite beads of brilliant emerald green colour and extremely high translucency, enclosed with a diamond clasp.
