MSM PRAI CELEBRATES NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT DAY 2023 WITH A WEEK-LONG OF ENGAGING ESG ACTIVITIES

A total of 1,850 mangrove trees have been planted by MSM Prai since 2021

SEBERANG PRAI, OCTOBER 23, 2023 - In conjunction with National Environment Day 2023, MSM Malaysia Holdings Berhad (MSM), through its wholly-owned subsidiary MSM Prai Berhad (MSM Prai), reiterates its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives in preserving and conserving the environment. This commitment is demonstrated by organising Environment Week, which includes various ESG-related activities at its refinery in Prai, Penang.

The programme kicked off with the official launching of the replanting of a total of 150 mangrove trees at Sungai Prai, alongside MSM Prai refinery. This mangrove tree planting programme is a strategic collaboration with the Penang Environment Department (DOE) and the Penang Inshore Fishermen Welfare Association (PIFWA). It is a continual effort that started in 2021, where 700 mangrove saplings were successfully planted alongside the MSM Prai refinery. In 2022, an additional 1,000 mangrove saplings, including 200 at the Mangrove Small Education Centre and others in dedicated areas in Penang, have been planted in stages.

The Environment Week was officiated by Mayor Seberang Perai, YBhg Dato' Azhar bin Haji Arshad together with Head of Operation MSM Prai Berhad, Cheah Poh Lye and Director Penang DOE, Tuan Norazizi bin Adinan. Also present during the event are President of PIFWA, Ilias Shafie, and senior management of MSM Group, Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai (MBSP) and DOE.

Among the activities planned for the Environment Week are IETS Project Presentation by Asmawy Bin Ariffin, Head of Engineering MSM Prai Berhad, Mangrove Ecology and Ecosystem Talk by Dr Foong Swee Yeok from Universiti Sains Malaysia, The Needs of Industry in Conserving The Environment Talk by Aminurddin Bin Ahmad from PERHILITAN, PPE and The Use Of Spillage Kits to Manage Spills by SH Tan from Vibracon Sdn Bhd, Pollution Awareness and The Impact on The Environment Talk by Nur Hishaam Bin Sulaiman from DOE, The Importance of Recycling Talk and UPCYCLE Workshop by Fatin Habsah Ahmad and Azizul Abdul Rahim from MBSP, Exhibition and Talk on The Management of Oil Spills, Chemicals, Mercury and Ways to Handle Spills by Zulihuairi Abdul Rahman from Fire and Rescue Department Malaysia.

MSM Prai also encourages employees to bring 2kg of waste that can be recycled, such as bottles, plastic, paper, and aluminum, as well as e-waste, including cables, wires, televisions, printers, and computers, to further complement the program.
