Audi AG said Wednesday that Stephan Winkelmann will become president and chief executive officer of Italian luxury sports-car brand Lamborghini.

Mr. Winkelmann, who is also president of the Bugatti brand, will assume the new role on Dec. 1.

He previously led Lamborghini from 2005 to 2016 as CEO and president, and will now take over from Stefano Domenicali who will become head of racing at Formula 1, Audi said.

"Stephan Winkelmann has decisively shaped the history of Lamborghini," Audi Chief Executive Markus Duesmann said in a statement. "No one else stands more clearly for the Lamborghini brand, and he is exactly the right person to lead this unique brand into a successful future," Mr. Duesmann said.

Audi's parent company Volkswagen AG said earlier this week that it was reworking its Italian shareholding structure. This could give Volkswagen the option of spinning off the Lamborghini and Ducati brands.
