On Thursday, the FTSE 100 gained 0.3% amid optimism over debt ceiling talks and hopes of a more dovish Fed. It was also 0.3% higher today at 9.30 am.
Adding to the good mood today, a survey by research group GfK showed domestic consumer confidence reached its highest level in 15 months in May. It rose by three points to minus 27, up from minus 45 in January.
Industrial metals miners and energy firms overperformed, tracking higher commodity prices
Smiths Group Plc rose 0.7% after raising its guidance due to strong demand.
