Shares of technology companies rallied, as investors bought back into a sector that had undergone a rout last week.

Nvidia shares rose by more than 4%, but remain roughly 18% from their recent peaks.

"Tech was pounded last week" said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "Eventually, when all is said and done, corporate earnings is what truly makes a difference as far as making stocks move."

Talks between business software maker and data-management software firm Informatica have fizzled after the companies couldn't agree on terms, according to people familiar with the matter.
