Economic Insight:

Canadian policymakers should be increasingly concerned about the nation's balance of payments following the release of data for last year, economists say.

National Bank Financial says the magnitude and composition of the country's international assets "warrant growing attention." NBF notes strong profits on Canadian foreign direct investments were offset by a surge in interest payments to nonresident bondholders. This situation could unravel under a stagflation scenario, NBF says.

Canada recorded a current-account deficit of C$17 billion last year. BMO Capital Markets notes Canada also sustained deficits last year in foreign-direct investment, C$53 billion, and portfolio-investment flows, C$21 billion. Those deficits were funded through an influx of short-term currency and deposits, BMO says.
