STORY: New York's Columbia University has a long history of student protests and takeovers

In April 1968, hundreds of its students held a demonstration

against the Vietnam War, and Columbia's plans to expand its campus in Harlem

Protesters barricaded themselves inside Hamilton Hall

After a week-long occupation, the university called in the police

Many students were injured and hundreds were arrested

Anti-Vietnam War protests resumed on campus in the spring of 1972

In April 1985, students demanded that Columbia end indirect investments in South Africa

because of the country's racist apartheid policy
