A minor oil spill on mining land approximately 800m from Avon Dam storage

WaterNSW is acting to ensure Sydney's drinking water supply is not affected by a minor oil spill on mining land approximately 800m from Avon Dam storage.

Preliminary indications are that a relatively small volume of oil that has escaped from three decommissioned transformers is confined in the immediate vicinity.

Wollongong Coal ltd personnel are currently on site removing oil-contaminated soil from the area and the EPA, Sydney Water and NSW Health have been notified as per protocol.

WaterNSW is conducting water sampling and though there are no waterways in the immediate area, a floating containment barrier will be installed to isolate the nearest tributary as an added precaution.

Monitoring and remediation of the site will continue.
