Banks, lenders and other financial companies rose on speculation the Federal Reserve would stick to its plans and raise rates in June.
"Despite bouts of concern, almost all central banks remain supportive of growth," said analysts at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in a note to clients.
The European Central Bank called on eurozone banks to engage in more cross-border mergers Friday, warning that a lack of integration in the region's financial markets was risky and complicated ECB policy actions.
