Mobile operators across nineteen Arab countries had a combined 414,736 million cellular lines by the end of March 2016, up from 414,544 in the same period a year earlier, according to research from Arab Advisors Group.

Two of the cellular operators in Egypt; Vodafone and Orange were the largest Arab cellular operators in terms of subscriptions by end of March 2016.

Between November 2015 and November 2016, one MVNO launched its operations in the Arab World. Egypt’s Vodafone and Orange are the Arab World’s largest cellular operators by cellular lines.

“Prepaid services dominate the Arab cellular markets. By end of March 2016, 14 operators had prepaid subscriber bases of 90% or more. The Arab Advisors Group believes that the rapid growth in cellular line bases in the Arab World is clearly due to the increasing appeal of prepaid offers,” said Ms. Hiba Rabadi, senior research analyst at Arab Advisors Group.

“The cellular market in the Arab World is well ahead of the fixed-line market. In 2015, the aggregate cellular penetration rate reached 108.47%, compared to a fixed-line combined penetration rate of less than 9%,” Ms. Rabadi added.

The report, “A Scorecard of Key Performance Indicators of Cellular Operators in the Arab World”, provides a comprehensive analysis of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of the mobile operators in the Arab World. The KPIs are for the year 2015 and March 2016. The report covers 48 operators in nineteen countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Sudan, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen.
