Amanda Varricchio creates opportunities that she didn't have.

When Pratt & Whitney Test Engineer Amanda Varricchio attended Mercy High School in Middletown, Conn., she knew she wanted to become an engineer, but had limited outlets to pursue a career in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Today, Amanda ensures that Mercy students will never run into the same road blocks that she did.

For seven years, Amanda has mentored Mercy's FIRST Robotics team, the Tech Tigers - one of just two all-female Robotics teams in New England. Amanda challenges her mentees to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills - inside and outside the classroom - with an emphasis on discussion, compromise, and the ability to learn from one another. As Mercy High School junior Amy Agostino puts it, 'that is our power.'

UTC has invested $10 million in FIRST team and tournament grants since 1995 and has made an impact on the lives of more than 50,000 students in the U.S. and Canada.
