The expansion of sports daily AS in the United States has not gone unnoticed in North America. After seeing digital audiences soar in the US, the paper has been honored by Spain's Chamber of Commerce at the Ponce de León Excellence Business Awards 2016. AS received this year's highest honor, beating off stiff competition from the news agency EFE and the magazine Hola!.

Alfredo Relaño, editor-in-chief of AS, accepted the award on behalf of the company and later said in an interview: 'It's great recognition in a country where football is becoming increasingly popular. We're thrilled with this award from the Chamber of Commerce in the United States. What's more, the timing is perfect, what with the Euro 2016 going on on one side of the Atlantic side and the America's Cup on the other. I encourage all Latin American sports fans to check out our website. I'm sure they'll like what they see.'

Alejandro Gómez, editor of AS Mexico and AS USA, also attended the prize ceremony on behalf of AS, as did Gonzalo Ochoa, managing director of Prisa Brand Solutions in Miami. Both said they were delighted with the award.

Jaime García-Legaz, Spain's Secretary of State for Trade, opened the ceremony by congratulating AS and other nominees for having taken the decision to expand in the United States: 'This country is the largest investor in Spain: more than Italy, Germany, the UK and France... Thanks to the United States, there are 180,000 jobs in Spain. The Spanish economy is also the fastest growing economy in Europe, by 3.6% annually, and here we pay tribute to companies like yours that have taken this step. And no better place than Miami, where there are 30,000 Spaniards - and growing '.

The ceremony, held at the Coral Gables Country Club in Miami, was attended by Cándido Creis, Consul General of Spain in Miami; Lauro Bravar, president of the Chamber of Commerce; Inmaculada Gutiérrez, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce; and Javier Pérez-Palencia, the organization's director.

Founded over thirty years ago, the Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the US is a nonprofit organization recognized by the Spanish Government. Its main objective is to promote trade relations between Spain and the United States.

Meanwhile, AS USA is an ambitious project by AS in the United States. It launched in January 2016, with its own newsroom headquartered in Miami, and creates content covering the enormous US sports scene and manages the AS websites in the US.
