POSCO : donates 104 steel houses to low-income families in Vietnam

On June 13, POSCO held a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the POSCO Steel Village in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam.

Over 300 people, including POSCO CEO Ohjoon Kwon, local government officials and officials from Habitat for Humanity attended the ceremony.

The POSCO Steel Village is the representative social contribution project of POSCO 1% Foundation which uses steel products to build houses for underprivileged families who live in poor residential environments. This project was started in 2014 in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Vietnam, near POSCO Vietnam, and 104 households were constructed over a three-year period. Over 500 local residents will live in new homes.

For this project, POSCO Group joined hands with the local government and Habitat. The local government in Vietnam provided the land, and POSCO 1% Foundation provided the construction cost, and POSCO SS-VINA supplied steel products including H beams produced locally.

In particular, POSCO A&C in charge of designing the Steel House, developed a new model of a house suited for the tropical monsoon climate in dry-rainy seasons. POSCO A&C improved the convenience of the house by reducing the sound of the rain, using heat insulating materials that block direct sunlight, and designing the house so that natural ventilation is possible.

Also, over 600 domestic and overseas POSCO Group employees and university student volunteers participated in the construction volunteer activities with the help of Habitat, which made this project more meaningful.

CEO Kwon said in his words of appreciation, 'During the past three years of construction, POSCO employees have been eagerly awaiting to build houses for the residents of Vung Tau as donors and volunteers. I hope that the Steel Village will become a new home and a village that symbolizes the solid relationship between Ba Ria-Vung Tau and POSCO, and for that matter, between Vietnam and Korea.'
