March 17--JCPenney stores in Monmouth and Ocean counties have dodged a bullet.

Only one New Jersey JCPenney store, in Rio Grande, Cape May County, is on the company's list of stores slated for closure, released Friday.

JCPenney has large department stores at the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown, Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold Township and Ocean County Mall in Toms River.

JCPenney said it will close 138 stores with liquidation sales slated to begin on April 17. About 4,000 employees will lose their jobs, but some may have opportunities elsewhere in the company, according to a statement.

JCPenney is among large retailers who are downsizing their operations to contend with stiff competition, particularly from online retailers. They are investing in profitable stores and online sales.
