Aug. 12--Construction crews continued to work Saturday on a $26 million resurfacing project on a portion of Highway 50, closing all but one lane of traffic in each direction during the weekend, said Deanna Shoopman, a Caltrans spokeswoman.

Crews will work around the clock this weekend as they pave roads on the highway's Pioneer Memorial Bridge, which spans the Sacramento River, carrying traffic between Sacramento and West Sacramento. Surrounding areas of the freeway, such as the Interstate 5 interchange, will also be affected.

On Friday night, drivers commuting over the bridge saw a 23-minute delay time due to construction, Shoopman said. That night, workers laid down polyester concrete on northbound and southbound Interstate 5 to Highway 50 connectors, which blocked drivers from traveling on the roads. They also worked on the No. 3 lane on westbound Highway 50.

Caltrans recommends that people traveling on Highway 50 leave an hour earlier than they normally would, as the city's surface streets might also see additional congestion given a number of events are planned locally for the weekend.

The Sacramento River Cats play games on Saturday and Sunday evenings at Raley Field, and Golden 1 Center is hosting a Kendrick Lamar concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The project is on track to meet its goal of finishing before the Labor Day weekend, Shoopman said. Crews will switch back to a nighttime-only schedule at 6 a.m. Monday.
