The 3GPP standardization committee has approved the completion of the standalone (SA) Release 15 5G specifications. After the release of the 5G New Radio specifications for non-standalone (NSA) operation in December 2017, another essential step of standardization of 5G has therefore been successfully completed on the way to realizing a full end-to-end 5G system. We welcome this timely completion, which is the result of strong and dedicated collaboration in the global industry!

The completion of SA specifications which complements the NSA specifications, not only gives 5G NR the ability of independent deployment, but also brings a brand new end-to-end network architecture with a cloud -friendly core network. This provides a solid basis to introduce innovative new solutions based on reduced latency and Network Slicing which will bring the full benefits of 5G to our industrial customers.

Only recently in Berlin, we implemented the world's first NSA trial in a commercial network in Europe. As we expand this Berlin cluster we will simultaneously use it to assess 5G performance in the field to prepare, subject to spectrum availability, for the rollout of 5G networks in 2020. Initial rollout will be a part of a significant capacity enhancement to provide high speed connectivity and differentiated services starting in selected areas of interest, such as cities and campus networks.

With SA, we now look forward to continuing our cross-industry collaboration to accelerate the 5G ecosystem and solution development, and together with our vertical industry customers explore new business opportunities for automotive, energy, Industry 4.0 and other sectors.

The era of Transformational 5G is already in sight. Let's continue our path.
