Green finance, whether in bond or loan format, refers to any debt instrument intended to raise financing to fund green and sustainable projects, thus contributing to fight climate change and achieve sustainable growth objectives.

In the ten years since the issue of the first green bond the market has grown exponentially. In 2016 its size was estimated at $86 billion. The green loan market is also expected to start seeing strong growth.

BBVA is playing a key role in the development of this market, and has become one of the leading players in the green bond market and a pioneering company in the global green loan segment.

Ricardo Laiseca, BBVA Head of Global Finance, explains what green finance is and talks about the bank's commitment: 'BBVA has invested in capabilities, teams and people to deliver the best green growth solutions to our customers.'
